Live band or DJ: how to decide for your wedding

The real difference is energy, not song count

A DJ can play any recording ever made. A band cannot. But guests do not dance because a song exists — they dance because the room feels alive. A live horn line, a vocalist working the front of the stage and a drummer stretching a groove because the floor is full create a physical energy a playback system does not replicate.

The trade runs the other way too. If your must-play list is heavy on modern electronic production, exact-recording hip hop or long themed sets, a DJ delivers those note for note.

Cost, plainly

• —New Jersey DJ with MC and lighting: roughly $1,500-$3,500.
• —Four to five piece band: roughly $6,800-$9,000.
• —Six to seven piece band: roughly $9,000-$13,000.
• —Band plus DJ between sets: usually included in a full band package, not an extra vendor.

Questions that settle it fast

• —Is live music something you have personally loved at other weddings?
• —Does your venue have a stage or a corner that fits 6-8 people plus a PA?
• —Is your must-play list mostly band-friendly, or mostly studio-produced tracks?
• —Is entertainment 8-12% of your budget, or is the number fixed and small?

The hybrid most couples actually want

You rarely have to choose. Most professional bands, including ours, run DJ service between sets from the same booth, so there is never silence and any song outside the live book still gets played. You get live energy for the peaks and full catalogue coverage for everything else.
