How to choose a wedding band (without guessing)

7 min read

The five things that actually predict whether a band fills your dance floor — and the red flags most couples miss until it's too late.

Start with the room, not the playlist

Almost every couple starts by asking a band for their song list. It is the least useful question you can ask. Nearly every professional wedding band in New Jersey can play the same 300 songs. What separates a packed dance floor from a polite one is whether the band can read a room and change course in real time.

Before you shortlist anyone, picture your reception at 10pm. Are your guests a Motown-and-horns crowd, a 90s hip-hop crowd, a multigenerational family that needs a bit of everything? Choose a band whose live footage shows that exact crowd dancing — not a studio recording, and not a highlight reel.

Watch full, unedited reception video

A sizzle reel is a marketing asset. A 20-minute unedited set is evidence. Ask every band on your list for at least one continuous, uncut video from a real wedding.

  • Is the dance floor full during the whole clip, or only in the cut moments?
  • Do transitions between songs land tightly, or does energy drop between numbers?
  • Does the vocalist sound the same live as on the demo?
  • Is the MC clear, warm, and brief — or does he talk over your night?

Ask the five questions that actually matter

  • Which specific musicians are contracted for my date, by name?
  • What happens if one of them gets sick — who subs in, and have they played with you before?
  • How many sets, how long, and what plays during breaks?
  • Will you learn our first dance song, and is there a fee?
  • What is included in the quote — travel, PA, lighting, MC, ceremony, cocktail hour?

Red flags

  • No unedited live video available on request.
  • A quote that changes once you name your venue.
  • Vague answers about which players will actually show up.
  • No liability insurance — most New Jersey venues require $1M.
  • Pressure to sign the same day with a 'today only' discount.
