Tipping your wedding band, vendor meals and the rest of the etiquette

Is a tip expected?

Tipping a band is customary but never required, and it is not built into a contract. In New Jersey, couples who tip typically give $25 to $50 per musician, or 10 to 15% of the total fee for exceptional service. Hand it to the bandleader at the end of the night, or leave sealed envelopes with your planner.

Vendor meals

Most band contracts require a hot meal for each musician on a call over four hours, and most venues offer a discounted vendor plate. Feed them during dinner service, not during a set, and make sure the room has somewhere to sit.

Practical courtesies that improve the night

• —Confirm load-in access, elevator availability and parking in advance.
• —Provide a private space to change and store cases.
• —Give the band a final timeline at least two weeks out.
• —Name one point person for day-of changes so cues do not conflict.

Overtime

Ask the overtime rate before the wedding, not at 11pm. It is usually charged per 30 minutes for the full ensemble. Decide with your planner who is authorised to approve it so you are not negotiating on the dance floor.
